Connecting with our Veterans

Members of the SJC Student Council spent some time with local veterans at
Deer Lodge Hospital last week.

It was a memorable experience for everyone involved and a wonderful opportunity for
cross-generational connections.

St. James Collegiate's Future Engineers

Recently, students from St. James Collegiate trekked through the first blizzard of the year to get a taste of what life at the Faculty of Engineering is like at the University of Manitoba.

The Engineering student council hosted their second of three outreach events to give students from high schools, from all over the city, a chance to explore the Engineering Faculty and its various departments.

Students attended an information session that outlined the admissions process, the different programs offered in the faculty and their possible career paths, as well as the the requirements for a degree in each of the fields.

The students were then taken on a tour of the facilities and labs in the areas of Biosystems, Computer, Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering.

They saw everything from massive bridge construction and testing equipment to formula electric race cars to microscopic circuits.

After the tours they were treated to lunch, and some words of encouragement and inspiration from the Dean of the Faculty.  Afterwards, they were engaged in an engineering competition in which they designed a sound dampening device given a vast array of materials.  Overall, the students had a great day and were exposed to all sorts of exciting and interesting applications of scientific knowledge.
