Garett Lee Sidor Basketball Scholarship

Adam Schmidt, a grade 12 student at St. James Collegiate has been selected as the 2014 recipient of the Garett Lee Sidor Basketball scholarship.

This award is named after Garett, who was a student/ athlete at Windsor Park Collegiate.  Garett tragically passed away in May of 2007, just a couple of months after his team, the Windsor Park Royals captured the Provincial “AAA” basketball Championships, where he was selected as an all star.   Garett was an all around athlete who participated in hockey, volleyball and basketball.   Garett’s friends and family have come together to put a $500.00 scholarship in his name to be awarded to a “AAA” basketball player each year.

Adam (AJ) is a very dedicated athlete on the St. James Jimmies basketball team, that captured bronze at this year’s Provincials.  He was also captain of the school Volleyball team, and secretary of student council.   He is a real team leader, and as the ‘sixth’ man, is consistently the hardest working player on the team.  He would spend time with teammates going over plays, and work just as hard in practices as in games.  He is also a member of the Youth in Philanthropy group at the school, and maintains an 85% average.

Bold Ideas

Recently, two students from St. James Collegiate presented their innovative new ideas for the City of Winnipeg at the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce BOLD Conference held at Red River College. The two presenters were joined by several other student from St. James and all of them represented the school incredibly well.

Pictured below on the right side of the panel is Chris L, whose idea of turning school rooftops into green spaces with fresh vegetables grown for school use as well as providing student gathering areas was very well received and started a lengthy discussion among the students gathered.
Go to the YouTube site below to check out part of his presentation.

Pictured below, third from the left, is Alexa Z whose idea of putting a bike path that would follow the rivers in Winnipeg, but be above the waterway was also well received and fit a common trend in the presentations that Winnipeg needs more bike paths!
Thanks to these students for their BOLD ideas and their commitment of time to prepare such excellent presentations. You represented the school very well and should be proud!
