Meeting the Mayor

On Friday March 7th, 2014, Mr. Thorsteinson accompanied several students from St. James Collegiate to the State of the City Address hosted by the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce.  Following the speech by Mayor Sam Katz, the students were invited to meet the mayor in a small group session. Some fairly challenging questions were asked by some of the fifty students that were invited to the gathering. Thanks again to the Chamber of Commerce for making these opportunities possible for our Jimmies.

Sustainable Wilderness Education Quinzees

This activity was part of our outdoor sustainable living unit.  The amount of snow this year worked in our favour.  We spent one class inside discussing these types of structures and one day to pile the snow and build and then two more days to dig out the inside.  Some of the structures were quite elaborate inside having benches around the perimiter, others were large enough to sleep more than 8 people. Students worked in groups of 5 or 6 to share the workload and demonstrated the importance of teamwork.

Students soon learned the insulating properties of snow and being out of the wind. Students were also very surprised at how strong the structures became once the snow had been piled up for a couple of days.  I think students had just as much fun tearing these structures down at the end as they did building them.

Brooklands Literacy: In March!

On Tuesday, March 18, Ms. Frolek, Ms. Tuchscherer and 27 former Brooklands School students went back to Brooklands for our annual literacy event. We arrived at 7:00 a.m. to prepare a pancake breakfast for all students and staff. St. James students then visited each classroom to read to the class. After recess, we had an assembly and each Brooklands student was presented with a book of their own selected by their teacher, complete with a message written inside by our students. Many of our students recalled being at the breakfast event themselves when they attended Brooklands and shared their memories of the books they received. Special thanks to Patricia B. and Monica S. for their organizational skills in making this event a success once again. Looking forward to next year!
