We Went Home To Read!

This years marks the 10th Anniversary of the Brooklands Literacy Project. SJC students who hail from the Brooklands area returned to their home community on February 28th, to act as role models and promote reading and to help Brooklands School wrap up their "I Love To Read Month" activities.

The high school students prepared a nutritious pancake breakfast for over 200 staff and students and then modelled reading in the classrooms. The morning was capped off with each student receiving a brand-new book to take home to share with their family. We would like to thank our generous sponsors, Safeway (Keewatin) and The United Way Youth Connections Program, without whom this project would not be possible.

Wilderness Survival Class @ Fort Whyte Alive

The students of Mr. Ingram's and Miss van Aggelen's Wilderness Survival class enjoyed a beautiful spring day at Fort Whyte Alive on February 13,2013. Students participated in outdoor activities including hiking, snowshoeing, orienteering, fire and shelter building all while learning the importance of reducing their carbon footprint, sustainable wildlife techniques and sustainable living habits outdoors.  This field trip complements the essential learning outcomes associated with this new survival wilderness course being offered this semester at St. James Collegiate. Cross-country skiing and Ice fishing are the next planned outdoor activities.

Art Ceiling Tile Project

This ceiling tile painting has been recently completed by 3 students in the Grade 10 art program, under the supervision of Ms. Bachewich.  The tiles will soon be installed, near the Northeast entrance, and are meant to  convey the sense of "family" felt by so many students who attend St. James Collegiate.  Esther L., Manresa Z. and Tiana B. had fun painting colourful caricatures of students and staff in a happy close-knit circle.
