SJC Joins "Stop A Bully!"

As an added initiative from our Safe Schools Committee, St. James Collegiate is now partnering with Stop A Bully, Canada's anti-bully reporting system which allows students to use an anonymous on-line format to report issues.  We hope this added communication tool will take our safe school initiatiaves to a higher level.  We now have the reporting link on our school website.  For more information visit http://www.stopabully.ca/

SJC @ Siloam Mission

For the sixth consecutive year, staff and students from St. James Collegiate offered service with a smile to the patrons of Siloam Mission. On December 19th we prepared and served a holiday meal for over 300 people while Vocal Ascent (a St. James community choir directed by SJC Alumni Debbie McLeod) performed a spectacular selection of Christmas carols for all to enjoy. A second group of SJC volunteers spent the evening in the basement of Siloam sorting through donations of clothing for patrons. The experience was both fun and rewarding for all participants.

December 17th Letter To Parents

International UNESCO Conference

Written by Mason M.

From December 10th-12th, I had the opportunity to participate in the UNESCO conference at the University of Winnipeg.  The main focus of the conference was learning to change the world.  They accomplished this learning by having workshops or "Themes".  The first theme was Identity, Diversity and World View.  The second was Liberty and Equality and the final theme was Freedom of expression of Opinion.  Each workshop had 4 presenters to talk about a specific subject that related to them personally, and each presentation was very enlightening and interesting.  The fact that the topics they spoke about related to them made each one much more interesting.  After the presentations for a theme were made, we would discuss it within our "villages", consisting of other students.  Even though we were a little hesitant about speaking in the beginning, it became very easy once we became comfortable with each other.  I was very happy that I got to meet so many new people, and the relationships I had with my other village members made it that much more enjoyable.  The other activities such as Rwandan dancing also made the experience very memorable.  I would easily consider attending this conference in the future, and I encourage others to do so as well!

SJC Students Meet With Premier Selinger

On December 11th, 2012, Mr. Thorsteinson and a group of St. James Collegiate students attended the Premier of Manitoba's State of the Province Address hosted by the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce. Along with nearly 1000 members of the business community, they heard how the province is doing so far and how the future is looking. Following the presentation, the students were invited to meet with the Premier, a St. James Collegiate grad, in a small group question and answer period with other high school students from the across the city.

Aboriginal Students' Group Holiday Feast

The library was "abuzz" on Thursday a.m. as 65 George Waters and St. James students participated in the 3rd Annual Aboriginal Holiday Friends Feast.  After smudging, students "crafted" for over an hour creating some beautifully designed mini - ornamental headdresses.  The morning ended on a high note with a potluck feast of Indian tacos, oranges, cookies and yummy homemade shortbread.  It was a great way to share some time with one another.

SJC Volunteer Readers @ Brooklands

For the third time this year, a group of SJC students who live in the Brooklands area went to Brooklands School to read with kindergarten and grade 1 students and to engage the kids in structured play.  The students will return to Brooklands once more before the winter break to join the staff and students for a holiday dinner.

Winter Concert - December 11th, 2012

The Winter Concert is only 6 days away!  St. James Collegiate will showcase our Band and Choir students on December 11, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. in the school gymnasium.  Students should arrive at the school for 6:30 p.m. dressed in their Band shirt and black pants.

In order for the Band to sound its best, everyone needs to prepare properly.  Playing during class time is not enough.  Students should be practicing 20 minutes a day to prepare for the concert.  Even if you know your notes and rhythms, the more you practice at home, the more confidence and endurance you will have for the concert (and the better the Band will sound!).

Students should be practicing the following music:
Senior Band:  Spania; 20 Carols in Two Minutes; Elves Dance from “Nutcracker”
Senior Jazz:  Jumpin' Jellybeans; Into the Sun; A Jazzy Merry Christmas

Check the Band Website for more information.  Thanks for your support!
