Aboriginal Drum Making Workshop

The library was a blur of activity on Thursday, Sept. 27th as Stan Kipling led a group of George Waters and St. James students in an Aboriginal drum making workshop.  19 drums and drum sticks were created.  Once the drums have dried the students will called back for a traditional feasting and drum blessing.  It was a really cool experience!

On Wednesday September 26th, Mr. Lister's Digital Photos class went to Bruce Park on a field trip for a chance to apply what they have learned in class during the first month. The results are pretty awesome! #nofilter #nophotoshop

Deaf For A Day Challenge

September 23th t0 29th is National Deaf Awareness Week.  On September 25th, in recognition of this, St. James Collegiate and George Waters Middle School held a "Deaf for a Day Challenge".
The challenge was offered on three levels:

level 1 - Deaf for an hour

level 2 - Deaf for a half day

level 3 - Deaf for a day

Staff and students agreed to reduce their hearing capabilities with ear plugs and refrained from using their voice to communicate for a certain period of time. Each person who participated in the challenge received two sheets of tips; one sheet had tips on how they could cope throughout the day with reduced hearing and one sheet had tips about how others could best communicate with them. At the end of the day, participants filled out a brief sheet of questions to reflect on their experience.

SJC & GWMS Medicine Picking

Thursday, Sept. 20th - saw a number of our St. James and George Waters students out at Little Mountain Park participating in an Aboriginal Medicine Picking Field Trip.  Ms. Cooke our librarian led us in a smudging and a discussion of the four traditional Aboriginal medicines (tobacco, cedar, sage and sweetgrass). We then spread out across the field to gather sage to bring back to our families or to be used in the daily smudging that takes place with a number of our students at the school.

SJC and the UNESCO Schools Network

Because of our involvement in the UNESCO Associated Schools Network, some SJC students will have the opportunity to get involved in the Tri-National Project on Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights Education (Israel - Germany - Canada), held December 10 - 12, 2012 at the U. of W.

St. James Collegiate will be the official welcoming centre as students from around the world arrive in Winnipeg.  We are excited and honoured!  More details will be posted as we get closer to this event.

Terry Fox Walk

It was a beautiful but brisk day on Monday September 17th, 2012 when our entire school embarked on a 4k walk to honour the memory of Terry Fox and to raise awareness in our community for Cancer research. The walk began at the school and headed down Portage, through Assiniboine Park and back through Bruce Park. Students were then treated to a BBQ lunch.

SJC Welcomes Mr. Johnson - New Band Director

We are pleased to welcome Mr. Johnson as our new band director. He has asked that we share the following information with you.
-->

"Welcome new musicians and returning members!  My name is Mr. Johnson and I am excited to be teaching Band and Jazz Band at George Waters and St. James Collegiate this year.  I hope you have enjoyed your summer and are ready to get back into the swing of things.

The first few classes will be spent on expectations and organizational issues, but we will be playing our instruments as soon as we can.  Please take care of Band fees early in September if possible.  Instrument rental $120; method book $10 (except gr. 8 students); Band shirt $10 (new GWMS students only).  The instrument rental fee may be paid in installments to ease the financial burden families face in September.

Please check out the Band Website at http://www.sjsd.net/~fjohnson.  Information will be updated regularly during the year so please look at it periodically in case some of the notes sent home mysteriously disappear.  A letter with more information about the program and a course outline will be coming home shortly.

I am looking forward to a great year!  Thanks for your support."
